History of the Club
On 5th June 1932 Howard Boys of Weedon organised a model flying meeting at Sywell at which the Northampton Model Aero Club was formed. Mr E Twining of Twining Models was appointed the first President.
1933 NMAC invited to give a display at Sywell Aero Club pagent.
Membership increased and several separate county clubs were formed. Model flying continued at Sywell and on Northampton Racecourse.
1937 Mr E W (Ted) Evans opened a Model Shop in Northampton and joined the club. The use of the club badge incorporating the Town Coat of Arms was approved.
1938 Howard Boys gained a British record for tailless models.
1939 -1945 The Club continued during the war with indoor flying meetings and flying on local parks.
1946 Three members represented the Club at a contest at Lyon in France. Howard Boys gave a spectacular display of rocket propelled models and was awarded a special prize.
1948 The Club held a large model exhibition in the Town Hall, lasting a week and considered the best exhibition in Britain by a single model club. Club member Roy Chesterton joined the British team to compete in the USA for the Wakefield Trophy,considered to be the most important Aeromodelling contest in the world. Roy won the huge trophy which was displayed in the banks and shops in the town.
1949-1959 Many club members competed in International contests with some successes. Howard Boys was the winner of one of the first Radio Controlled Contests in 1950 and he also visited many countries in Europe demonstrating radio controlled flying.
1960 - 1970 Several members became National Champions in their field of modelling and also some very high placings in International contests.
1970 - 1973 National successes in Power, Rubber and Glider duration and Control Line flying culminated in the award of the British National Champion Club for 1972. This massive trophy was presented by the Mayor Ken Livingstone at the Club's prize giving that year.
1974 - 1984 Decline in free flight competition models. Radio control power models and gliders predominate in the Club.
1982 Clubs Golden Jubilee Celebration party and flying event at Billing Aquadrome. Club President Howard Boys presents prizes and cuts 50th birthday cake. This was also the year of club exchange visits with Marburg Model Flying Club, Northampton's twin town in Germany. 2007 was the 25th anniversary of the visits with celebrations at Marburg.
1983 Club founder and President Howard Boys dies in March aged 79.
1988 Club purchases its own 20 acre field at Slapton near Towcester. One of the first clubs in the country to do this.
